Factsheet: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
New career prospects in participation counseling for speech therapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists Date: September 3, 2025What is augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to all measures that enable people without or with severely limited spoken language to communicate. The aim is to create access to language - with gestures, symbols, communication books or technical aids such as speech computers. AAC enables participation in everyday life, at school, at work or in care facilities.
Who is AAC relevant for?
AAC is used for people with mental, physical or neurological impairments - for example, children with autism or Down's syndrome and adults who have suffered a stroke or have ALS. The limitations are very individual - as are the ways of communicating.
What do participation advisors do?
Specialists in the field of participation counselling for people with disabilities, relatives and institutions provide support in the selection and use of communication aids. They advise, train and adapt aids to specific needs together with the environment. The focus is not on the product, but on the person and their communication goals.
The work is mobile and organized regionally. Participation consultants work closely with therapists, schools, residential homes and care facilities, often on behalf of specialized medical technology companies or aid providers.
Why is thisinterestingfor speech therapistsand therapists?
Many specialists in speech therapy, speech therapy or occupational therapy are very familiar with the needs of non-speaking people - but have so far only made selective use of the UK. Working in participation counselling in the UK opens up a completely new, meaningful career path here: away from the tight rhythm of individual sessions and towards individual counseling, systemic support and more effectiveness in everyday life.
In addition, there are reliable framework conditions such as regular working hours, no billing obligations, modern work equipment, a company car for private use and further training opportunities in the field of assistive technologies and communication.
Who is suitable for the job?
Professionals with a therapeutic background and experience in working with people with complex support needs are ideal - for example, speech therapists with a focus on the UK, speech therapists with a neurological focus or occupational therapists with experience in an interdisciplinary setting. Curative educators with an interest in communication aids will also find an exciting new professional field here.
